the 39-mile section from Waynesboro north of U.S. Highway 33 at Swift Run Gap. The part roads in these areas will be closed at dusk each day and will re-open at 8 a.m. on the following mornings. The remaining section of the Skyline Drive, between U.S. Highways 211 and 33, which provides access to Big Meadows lodge and campground, will remain open as usual.
“Several deer have already been killed this fall on Skyline Drive by poachers, and similar actions during the past five years have proved very successful in countering illegal hunting activities in these sections of the park,” Jacobsen stated. Jacobsen said that these nighttime closures have caused, little inconvenience to legitimate park visitors, and have permitted park rangers to concentrate their air patrols on known problem areas and increase contacts with hunters along the Park boundary.
