Republican Ronald Reagan squeeked to victory in the November 4 Presidential election in Rappahannock Tuesday night on his way to a landslide win in Virginia and the rest of the country. With 81.9 per cent of the county’s registered voters casting ballots, unofficial returns put Reagan on top with 1,179 followed by incumbent Jimmy Carter with 1,055 and independent John Anderson with 99.
Carter made his concession speech at 9:51 p.m. Tuesday before the final count of Rappahannock ballots and prior to the polls even closing in California. Returns showed the incumbent carrying only Georgia, West Virginia and Rhode Island for 74 electoral votes. Reagan had won or was leading with 384 electoral votes, well over the 270 he needed to be elected.
