The dedication and naming of a memorial reading room at the University of British Columbia in honor of Clarence "Coolie” Verner took place Sunday, October 26, at the school.
The late Mr. Verner was the son of Mrs. A. M. Verner of Washington. He was a native of Portsmouth, Ohio, born April 25, 1917.
The reading room was dedicated to the furtherance of adult education in which Professor Verner was active. He was the first chairman of the Commission of Professors of Adult Education providing and initiating role in two key publications. He co-authored publications in rural sociology and historical cartography, two diverse areas in which he was a scholar.
Mr. Verner received his A. B. degree from the College of William and Mary in 1937, served in the U. S. Army from 1942 to 1947 and then completed graduate studies at that college three years later.
He obtained a M. A. degree in 1951 from Columbia University of his Ed. D. the following year. Professor Verner was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of London in 1952-53, a professor of adult education at Florida State University 1953-61 and at the University of British Columbia from 1961 to 1977 when he retired. He died October 12, 1979, at Mayne Island, B. C.
