Recently Kathy Kiley and Helen Holschuh did an • inventory of all items currently in the possession of the Rappahannock County Historical Society.
They have turned up some very interesting items, such as a 100-year-old account of a spectacular murder in 1 Harris Hollow and the ensuing trial, petitions for reparations for horses and supplies the Yankees took during the Civil War, and a 1926 newspaper account of what the motoring tourist should see in the Blue Ridge town of Sperryville.
“We treasure all these items but realize that there are many, many gaps in our knowledge of Rappahannock history,” said Mrs. Holschuh. “For instance, we have a good deal on who did what in the Civil War, but almost nothing on the First and second World Wars and surely someone from this county was in the Spanish American War.”
The Historial society would like to fill in these gaps with your help. If you have any of the following items that you would be willing to have the society copy, or you would like to give the original, it would be appreciated.
Genealogies: there are a few, but not enough. Almost every week, someone calls or writes the library, the Historical Society or local historians with a question. If you have a family genealogy, please send a copy to the Historical Society.
