With help from Richard McNear, planner for Fauquier County, the Rappahannock planning commission will begin in January the long delayed ! review and revision of the county’s zoning and subdivision ordinances.

“The first of the year, we have to get these ordinances reviewed and updated,” announced commissioner Newbill Miller at last Wednesday’s meeting. He reported that McNear, formerly a Rappahannock resident, had moved back to the county and while not willing to take Miller’s place on the planning commission as the Hampton District representative, had agreed to serve as an ex officio member during the ordinance review. “He does this 40 hours per week,” Miller added.

Commonwealth’s attorney Douglas Baumgardner interjected that the supervisors had recently authorized him to retain a land use planning expert to help in drawing up ordinance amendments and that coincidentally, he'd also chosen McNear. He said that a letter from the Fauquier planner is now on its way to the supervisors, identifying “from a professional . planning standpoint" areas

Rappahannock’s ordinances that are weak or in conflict with state enabling legislation.

“There are a couple of areas where immediate action might be warranted,” Baumgardner continued. He suggested adoption of a conditional zoning ordinance “to give the county more flexibility" in dealing with rezoning requests, a proposal
