But all the while that second side, his intellectual half, keeps tugging away in the opposite direction. Bryan Daley is not the ayerage catebarroom performer. He’s as gifted intellectually as he is talented musically. When the 12 months set aside for music are over, he’ll return to his other love, scholarship, and take his PhD exams at the University of Virginia, the culmination of eight years of graduate studies.
Many performers rely on a second profession. Washington area blue grass musicians work as accountants, lawyers, photographers. Rock ’n’ roll stars leave the concert stage for the silver screen and corporate offices. But even in a world where out-of-theordinary becomes commonplace, Bryan Daley’s double life is still unusual. His second field of expertise is Tibetan Buddhism.
He acknowledges that Eastern philosophy and religion is a long way from songs about broken hearts sung in a smokey Charlottesville bar. “They are somewhat diverse but they reflect my two different parts, intellectual and sensual.”
In Rappahannock, living in the house his parents bought as a vacation home 12 years ago, Daley has kept his intellectual profile low. He explained that he hasn’t broadcast his scholastic achievements fof fear of making local people standoffish, deterred from friendly overtures because they suspect their newest neighbor might be one of those effete intellectual snobs.
Intellectual snob? Daley is about as much of an intellectual snob as the good old boys who get together for pool and a few cool ones on Saturday night.
He’s a high brow with a low keyed, down home manner.
Daley’s educational 1 background is evident in conversation. Trying to keep it hidden would be like trying to diguise a pregnancy that’s reached its eighth month —you just can’t keep it from popping out. But he has none of the irritating habits that mark the intellectual snob. He talks instead of lecturing, never switching the i topic to Tibetan Buddhism when there’s a lull in the conversation.
