Lieutenant and Mrs. Hawks have started a new program this year that has worked very well. They compiled a list of specific gifts requested by poor children and advertised locally for pledges. Fifty children will receive exactly what they want for maybe the first time in their lives.
The requests range from a practical “pair of girls size five shoes” to Star Wars toys and games. The Army also hofds Christmas parties for poor children and for those in nursing homes and jails.
The Life of A Soldier
It is the policy of the Salvation Army to demand the same degree of wholehearted commitment that General Booth expected over a century ago. The troops are trained in Army seminaries. These "cadets” take Psychology, Theology, Accounting and other practical courses for two years before being sent to the front as Lieutenants. They marry only within the service.
The Salvation Army has had a history of feminism from the start. Women are promoted as rapidly as men and do the same work. Mrs. Hawks is also a lieutenant in Front Royal and together they earn the standard married lieutenant’s pay - $122.00 weekly. After 45 years of service they can expect to make $144.50 a week as majors.
They work six or seven days a week, combining the social service activities of the Army with the pastoral duties of the church. Their congregation is also expected to work, as service to the poor and miserable is at the very foundation of the church’s doctrine.
