They employed any dramatic device that would attract attention: brass bands, parades, empty coffins, and prison uniforms. In their early years in New York they commandeered double-decker buses to gather up drunks and derelicts and transport them back to the Mission.
Those too drunk to board buses were thrown in a water wagon. Those that didn't make it to the Mission to sober up amidst hell-fire sermons and hot soup "fell off the wagon.”
