mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in order to stimulate the natural functions of the heart and lungs and so to save a life.
The Red Cross CPR course focuses on mouth-to-mouth breathing, one rescuer CPR, two-rescuer CPR, care for conscious and unconscious choking victims, mouth-tomouth-and-nose breathing and CPR for babies and small children. The course also increases awareness of early warnings, risk factors and symptoms that signal a heart attack and teaches the modified Heimlich maneuver for dislodging foreign objects stuck in an air passage.
Pullen, Huff and Brown will begin the Red Cross CPR course in Sperryville in early January. Classes involve practical demonstration and training with two hours total of lectures and will be held three nights for three hours each. A CPR certificate is awarded to everyone who successfully completes the course.
Depending on public response, CPR classes will be offered later in other Rappahannock communities. The committee also has tentative plans to provide a course on emergency first aid for poison victims if there is community interest in the program.
The rescue training committee is willing to come to meetings of clubs, groups and organizations to give a 15-minute talk and film in hopes of raising interest in the CPR course. For further information, contact Pullen, Brown of Huff.
