The symmetrical location of the cairns on either side of a north-south line suggests that they served as horizon markers for sunrise and sunset. All of the medicine wheels which have been examined share one common feature—they were built on the highest land around with a clear view of the horizon.
Speculation about the Bighorn Medicine Wheel and other similar medicine wheels continues to engage the attention of astronomers like Dr. Knappenberger who wonder if the alignments are only coincidental, or if there is more significance to the design of the wheels that is yet to be discovered.
