“As far as our church goes, we’re much like any other church,” Lt. Hawks explained. “We have members and services and Sunday School. The difference is in our emphasis on action.’’
Hawks said that the Salvation Army frequently comes under attack by other churches. “The idea is that each church should take care of its own,” Hawks said. “That’s a fine idea but it falls apart in reality. I can’t tell a homeless derelict to go see his own minister—that’s laughable. We’ve also helped many poor people whose churches just don’t have the same tradition of service.”
