Rappahannocks zoning administrator received a push this week toward enforcement of local sign ordinances from the county’s commonwealth’s attorney.
In a December 19 letter to Col. EmoMcNesr on file in. the county clerk’s office. Douglas Baumgardner reported that he has "received inquiries relative to alleged violation of Rappahannock County’s sign ordinances.” He noted that he earlier advised McNear to discuss with the supervisors how to proceed on en-^ forcement. a suggestion that the zoning administrator has apparently ignored to date.
As attorney for the supervisors, Baumgardner wrote, he requested McNear to “initiate an investigation" and take appropriate action pursuant to regulations in Article 11, the county’s sign laws, and section ,18 which sets responsibility for enforcement of the ordinance with the zoning administrator. Copies of the letter were sent to all the members of the board of supervisors.
Renewed concern over enforcement of the county’s sign laws comes in the wake of the November 13 meeting of the board of zoning appeals. At that session, Paul St. Clair’s application for a special use permit to erect a sign at Greenfield Farm on Route 211 to advertise his Black Kettle restaurant was unanimously denied. A few days later, the sign went up across the street from the location originally requested.
