Most of the guests are fellow friars who want quiet and a rest from active ministry. Others are lay people who come for an afternoon or evening of conversation and spiritual guidance. Some are neighbors, like Gordon and Sally Thornhill next door to the friary.
"They are the most wonderful neighbors in all of Rappahannock County. Everyone has welcomed us so warmly but Gordon and Sally have been so good to us,” said Father Augustine. "At 10 p.m. one night, our well went dry. We called up Gordon and he worked until it was repaired. Their warm friendliness is a treasure.”
The Thornhills return the affection. Recently, their daughter was home from the University of Virginia where she’s taking a course in religion this year. According to Gordon, she's spent hours next door at the friary, deep in conversation with the fathers. “They’re wonderful, wonderful men.”
Of the four friars now at Portiuncula, only Father Ronald and Father Augustine have been there Since the friary was founded.
