Telephone equipment for the deaf has received a big lift from computerization. To operate a TDD, a handset from a conventional telephone is placed in a cradle on the TDD. Phone messages are typed on a keyboard and the TDD’s mini-computer converts the typed message to a computer language that travels over the phone line. Messages are translated by the TDD on the other end and read on a display screen.
Brown and staff members at Centel’s corporate headquarters in Chicago are testing and evaluating various TDDs. “We’ll offer at least two models for sale here in Virginia, and we’re working on a plan where by January 1, 1981, we could possibly lease sets to customers who couldn’t afford to buy,” Brown said.
