The ritiro is an island of quiet in the order’s active religious life. It’s part of Franciscan history rediscovered in the aftermath of Vactican II. The Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Penance sent members of its community here from Ireland in 1840, according to Father Ronald. On the old sod, the order had a retreat house. “We dug into our own roots and discovered we had one,” Father Ronald said, "a place put aside where we can emphasize quiet and the spiritual life.” A similar retreat was founded three years ago at Boston.
“Our first job here is to pray. That’s our major function, to pray to God in the name of our whole community. Our second function is to welcome guests," Father Ronald said.
