“It really meant a lot to : him to have them here,” Hawks said. “We don’t often get to see such a clear-cut happy ending. He was acquitted and they all went home.”
Few Happy Endings
For many that the Salvation Army serves, no happy ending seems possible. Hawks said that he sees his share of those for whom salvation remains elusive.
“There are professional transients - they'll be here for support one night, at the Winchester Salvation Army the next night,” he said. Hawks has also unknowingly housed and fed fugitives, \ criminals, and occasionally, a fraud. v
