A fire on Christmas night, December 25, left the Terry Ketchem family homeless and without clothing or home furnishings when the house on Route 729 -near Ben Venue which they rented burned to the ground. The house was owned by Robert Walter of Charlottesville.
The Ketchems and their three childreh were away from home visiting his mother. Mrs. Marjorie J. Ketchem in Woodstock when the tragedy occurred.
The fire was first spotted from Route 211 by Mr. and Mrs. Lee Payne of Woodville who hurried to the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Baines next door and summoned fire departments. Before firemen reached the scene Lee Payne and Bob Baines managed to rescue the family’s pet dog and Mr. Baines checked the house for people possibly trapped inside.
