Evergreen trees, preferably in two or more rows, should be planted on the northwestern and northern sides of buildings to block winter winds. Windbreak plantings offer the greatest protection at distances of 5 to 7 times the windbreak height on the leeward side. However, where space is limited, smaller evergreen trees and shrubs planted closer to or up against a building can also provide protection and cause energy savings.
Mr. Vernam pointed out that groups of shrubs and trees should be planted in such a manner as to allow for the natural downhill flow of cooler air, promoting more circulation in summer and avoiding cold air pockets near the building in winter.
Plantings may also be used to deflect air from exhaust vents and air conditioners out of activity areas. Plant deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs on eastern, southern and western sides of outdoor air conditioning condensers. The hotter the condenser gets, the harder it has to work. As much as a 3 percent saving in &e system’s efficiency may be achieved by shading the condenser.
