Poinsettias ate a very hardy plant and will continue to grow indoors throughout ' the year. To have the plant bloom again next Christmas, however, specific steps must be followed.
After the bracts, which are the colored structure often called the flowers, and leaves have fallen off, start drying the plant. Store dried-off plants in a cool (SO degrees Fahrenheit) dry, light place until May. Water lightly, just enough to keep the root and stems from drying out excessively.
In May, prune the stems to J about six inches, start watering, fertilize, and place outdoors in June. Keep the ' tips pinched off until early September. Then, bring it into the house, place in a l sunny window and keep watered and fertilized. J A poinsettia responds to ^ day length and is known as a „ short day plant. Be sure it gets no light from sundown to sun up. Even very short periods of light at night may be enough to prevent or interfere with flowering.
