Forester-Planner William C. Vemam with the Virginia Division of Forestry reports that proper use of trees and shrubs can help reduce energy costs for winter heating and summer cooling. Large deciduous trees should be planted on southern, southwestern and western sides of buildings where they will block summer sunlight but allow full penetration of winter’s warming sunlight.
