Some of the customs that Virginians in this area observed were associated with ancient pagan rituals as well as the Christian tradition. The ancient counting song, “The , Twelve Days of
Christinas” wa^ found in the Appalachian Mountains years ago, long after it had been forgotten in England and in other parts of this country. Although using a Christmas theme, the song is a throwback to pagan times when counting songs were used to work magic. In the mountains, it was sung by adults to children, to help teach them their numbers. A game of forfeit was played along with it.
