10. EPIDEMICS—If the top news story of 1980 was judged on the basis of what people---w«re-- talking- aboutand how many county'homes were affected, the influenza epidemic that closed coiinty schools a week early for ,s Christmas vacation would be the hands down winner. Hardly a family in Rappahannock escaped a bout with the bug which sent half the youngsters in public schools here to bed with aches, pains and nausea.

In October, the county made nationwide news with a measles epidemic that began at a private school in Huntly. An intensive innoculation campaign the previous year coupled with immunization clinics set up at the first outbreak of the disease prevented the measles from spreading to the county’s public schools.
