Voters demonstrated their disenchantment with the county’s educational system at the polls last year in Rappahannock’s biggest news story of 1980. By an overwhelming margin of ten to one in a special June 17 court-ordered election, the voters called for a change in the method of selecting school board members from appointment by electoral trustees to appointment by the board of supervisors.
The election came after citizen pressure, rulings from the Virginia Attorney General's office and anticipation of the election outcome finally resulted in correction of two invalid appointments made by the trustees in Junes1979.

trustees anno^pc^dout did not vote as required on the appointments of Robert Eastham and Charles Eldredto the school board. Outraged citizens organized in response and collected the necessary number of signatures to have the issue of school board appointments placed on the ballot in a special election.
