faces looked down from the bench in Washington’s court room in 1980. Warrenton attorney W. Shore Robertson replaced 20th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Rayner V. Snead “who served for 27 years and John Alexander, former Senator to Virginia’s Generaly Assembly, replaced William W. Carson in General District Court. A heated caucus battle drawn along party lines preceeded the appointment of A. Burke Hertz of Flint Hill who took over juvenile and domestic relations court from William F. Moffett. Hertz’s appointment kept a district judgeship in Rappahannock which had previously been represented on both circuit and J and D benches.
6. ARSON — Four Sperryville barns burned to the ground on Halloween Eve in fires ruled to be arson. The wanted distruction of property galvanized local government, organizations, businesses beginning a reward fund that now totals over $10,000. To date, there have been no arrests although the investigation by state police arson investigators working with the Rappahannock Sheriffs Department is continuing.
