Cost estimates on a lagoon-type treatment facility with 95 per cent state and federal funding came in last July at S2.3 million, way over the $850,000 originally anticipated for the project. Faced with a shortfall of over $1 million, the county’s Water and Sewer Authority has gone back to the drawing boards with a $7,870 grant received from the Environmental Protection Agency last week to come up with a cheaper design alternative. Construction is now expected to begin in late spring of 1981.
9. NEW WASHINGTON TOWN HALL—The county’s only incorporated town entered the land trading business in 1980 and swapped the old fire department building, which served as the town hall, for the Methodist Church on Gay Street. Reportedly, the white frame building is worth considerably more than the fire hall, partially because it can be connected to a septic field on the next-door lot already owned by the town.
