England on the Eve of Epiphany or Twelfth Night, farm people would go to the apple orchard at sunset or after dark to toast the most promising tree with a drink of hard cider. Sometimes they poured some of the wassail on the trunk or branches to promote fertility. This was known as “wassailing” and we know it was done in this country as nearby as Albemarle County.
There were a lot of superstitions associated with New Year’s eve and New Year’s day. -Most of them have to do with bringing good luck in the New Year:
—Nothing must be removed from the house on New Year’s day; if this is done, most of the household items will disappear before the year is out.
—Collect money owed or due; or make as much money
you can on New Year’s < day. This will keep money coming in all year.
