Many Virginians in the early colonies were aware of reformation practices in England and the strict rules of the New England colonists which forbade them to observe Christmas or New Year’s day with any merriment. From all accounts, the fun-loving Virginians paid no attention to Cromwell’s edicts and the spirit of the holidays was so merry throughout Virginia that even the Scotch-Irish who settled in the southwest corner of the state were unable to restrain themselves for long.
In time, the Virginia colonies became known throughout the new world and even the old as the center of generous hospitality and a love for parties, dancing and strong drink. We know this was true on the great
