When the sleek motor vessel Sea Shepherd, presently crewing up and taking on supplies at the U.S. Coast Guard dock in Alexandria, sails at the end of the month for the Russian whaling grounds in the Bering Sea, a Rappahannock resident, Leslie Fillebrown, will be aboard as quartermaster.
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is the only organization to take a direct and highly visible role in the protection from slaughter and extinction of the harp seals and the dwindling whale populations.
The Society’s president, and leader of the current expedition, Paul Watson of Vancouver. B.C., has been jailed by the Royal Northwest Mounted Police for interfering with the slaughter of the harp seals, and has been threatened with shooting if he returns to the Gulf of St. Lawrence sealing grounds.
Nevertheless, the group was successful last March in saving the lives of 7100 baby seals out of approximately 10,000, managing to close down the seal hunt after only one day of operation.
The upcoming voyage will attempt to stop the Russians from slaughtering 179 California Grey Whales in the Bering Sea, followed by a confrontation in July at the Pribilof Islands, where a coterie of Japanese and Canadians plan to slaughter some 27,000 fur seals.
