While rabid bats are commonly found in this area, the last report of a rabid fox in Fauquier County was in 1975. No rabid foxes have been reported in Rappahannock County since 1966.
The main method used in controlling rabies is widespread immunization of dogs and cats against rabies. If dogs and cats are immune the risk of human exposure to rabies is greatly reduced. Rabies is almost always a fatal disease.
People should be aware that any wild animal having unusual behavior could be rabid. If caught, a wild animal that has bitten a person should be sacrificed and testecj for rabies. All bites by domestic or wild animals should be reported to the local health department. Among the common wild species, foxes, skunks and raccoons are most likely to transmit rabies infection to other wild animals and to domestic animals. V
