Colonel Slane also said that while the increased number of troopers has served as a deterrent to violations, an almost equally important result of the program has been that an average of more than 5,000 stranded or distressed motorists have been assisted by vtroopers on each CARE weekend.
Last year. troopers patrolled a total of 157,039 miles on the Memorial Day weekends and made 6.059 arrests. These included 4.587 arrests for speeding, 261 for reckless driving. 63 for drunk driving and 1.148 for other hazardous violations.
However, in 1980, 12 persons did lose their lives over the Memorial Day weekend.
