The Golden Panthers of Rappahannock completed their first season last week with a record of eight wins and four losses.
Sponsored by Eldon Farms, the Golden Panthers are. affiliated with the Rappahannock Athletic Association and played in the newly formed tri-county league organized by the RAA and groups from Madison and Greene counties.
The Panthers are coached by Gary Leake with assistance from Tim Williams and Roy Jenkins. From the-opening day of practice, Leake emphasized hard work, dedication, hustle and most of all, the will to win.
“Through these four goals, the Golden Panthers truly experienced success, not only through physical ability but also through mental ability by focusing on desire and sportsmanship,” the coach said.
The team is composed of 12 very talented 13-year-olds. The Golden Panthers had one of the league’s top pitching staffs in speedsters Chucky Jenkins, Craig Williams and Tony Williams. Defensively, they received nearly errorless play from David Herndon, Jeff Burke, Chris Williams, Troy Jenkins, Gary Jenkins, Warren Ellis, Bobby Huff and the dynamic duo of Rob Brown and Henry B. Wood, their coach reported.
Offensively, the Golden Panthers were extremely powerful and consistent with no starter batting under .335. As a team, they batted an excellent .408 and had a slugging percentage of over .750, according to Leake.
