Rescue personnel can get instructions from a doctor while enroute to the hospital. “If you don’t have that, you don’t have much of anything,” he maintained.
Huff read a letter of support for the EMS Council endorsement from the Flint Hill Fire and Rescue Squad signed by president H. S. Barksdale.
Supervisor Hubert Gilkey barely finished his motion for approval of the endorsement letter before supervisor H. B. Wood suggested the matter be tabled. “If the federal government drops its funding, how much will we have to pick up?” Wood asked, flipping through the packet of information provided by Rosson. “1 wouldn't like to vote on it today until I go over this and read it.”
“That’s fine but I'd like to point out that the letter commits you to nothing except philosophical support,” Rosson replied. Gilkey repeated his motion to endorse the EMS program, noting that it has been a help to the county's fire and rescue squads. He emphasized that the endorsement does not bind the supervisors to providing any funds.
“Well, that’s what they say. I’d still like to review it_I don’t see how one month’s delay will hurt,” Wood said.
Gilkey’s motion for endorsement died for lack of second. A second motion to table the matter until the board’s August^ meeting passed unanimously.
In earlier action, the board in a split decision named vice-chairman Dick Latham as acting chairman to serve until the annual reorganization meeting in January.
Gilkey voted against the motion, maintaining that Latham would have more authority if he were appointed chairman instead of just acting chairman. Latham opposed his own nomination since the action would leave the board without chairman or vice-chairman in his absence.
With Latham expecting to be out of the county during the first week of August, the supervisors moved their regular monthly meeting date from the first to the second Monday of next month, August 10.
