He acknowledged, however, that the state compensation board probably will not approve the four and a half full-time positions cited by the Rappahannock Fire and Rescue Association as needed for a county communications system to dispatch three deputies.
“I don’t think we’d require a full-time dispatcher,” said Estes, maintaining that the jailer could handle police, fire and rescue calls at least part of the day.
“You all might be able to work out the same situation that Sperryville has,” Wood told Estes. “That works well.”
“It works well for Sperryville but we had it in Chester Gap and it did not work for us,” countered supervisor Hubert Gilkey.
“We did it in Amissville for 20 years,” added Poling. But then the fire house was moved and the same person who handled dispatch calls “24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year” suffered a decline in health, he said. “I don’t think we can ask someone to volunteer to sit around a house for 24 hours a day (to take dispatch calls).”
“Maybe you’d have to find two people, maybe seven,” countered Wood.
