she was teaching in Madison County, Helen was arts and crafts director for a summer Girl Scout camp in New England.

“I’m sort of a jack of all crafts,” Helen joked, insisting repeatedly that her skills are those of an amateur and not a master.

“I have a great deal of interest and a smattering of ' skill in so many different fields that I’m an expert at nothing!" she maintained. “I paint. I’m not a great painter but 1 paint. 1 don’t pretend to be an expert but I have taught painting classes.”

She was also a member of the Rappahannock Arts and Crafts Club when that group was extremely active. The organization gave women who practiced crafts an opportunity to share ideas and talents, according to Helen. In addition, it was dedicated to preserving the old-time crafts that were fast disappearing from Rappahannock’s hollows.

"We sponsored workshops in as many crafts as we could find somebody \o teach," Helen recalled.

In recent years, however, the club gradually has disbanded, no longer holding its annual show at Sperryville’s fire hall. Its remaining members concentrate primarily on quilting projects, Helen noted. “That doesn’t really interest me. My crafts are all dirty crafts!" Helen cleans the paint and
