For 10 years now, Helen Kilby has been conducting her investigation. Her studies have led her to conduct classes in astrology. She no longer teaches but she still can be persuaded to find time in her busy schedule to draw up a chart for a friend.
No Daily Horoscopea
Helen is quick to stress that she doesn’t spend hours checking the stars and planets for direction on how to live her life. “A person who has to consult a daily horoscope is not reasoning. 1 don’t believe they ought to any more than 1 believe in tossing a coin or depending too heavily upon another person to make our decisions for us. Each of us must first think and then make our own decisions and assume full responsibility for our successes or failures,’’ she maintained.
“Sometimes very suggestible, gullible people get all caught up in astrology and go off the deep end but it isn’t the fault of the astrologer. I try to avoid discussing astrology with those people.”
Drawing a natal chart takes hours and hours of mathematical calculations. Helen uses an ephemeris, the same catalogue of statistics employed by astronomers to determine the position of the planets. The ephemeris gives the daily location of planets at midnight in Greenwich, England.
First, she must translate the birth hour into local mean time and then she has to calculate planetary movement during the interval between midnight and birth
