the EMS council’s administrative costs may not be available much longer, according to R os son. If money for administration isn’t forthcoming as anticipated from the state, Rosson said, the EMS council has no other alternatives since it’s doubtful that local governments will provide support.
The RappahannockRapidan Council is one of only three EMS councils in Virginia to be awarded funds next year, according to Rosson. But the federal money to establish repeater sites for communications between rescue vehicles and hospitals won’t be released until local governments make a commitment to maintaining the system, he said. The repeater site anticipated for Rappahannock in the coming year will bring advanced life through direct hospital contact to the entire county, he said.
In addition to the letter of endorsement being a prerequisite for federal funds, Rosson said the EMS Council wanted assurance that “we’re not doing someting (a) that’s not appreciated and (b) won’t be supported.”
Rappahannock particularly would benefit from a communication system which provides direct hospital contact because of its distance from medical facilities, according to Rosson.
Supervisor Dick Latham asked if county squads had sufficient personnel to man advanced life support equipment. Personnel Already Trained
Flint Hill rescue squadsmen Frankie Huff and Kenneth Pullen currently are qualified for advanced life support but have little opportunity to use their skills, Rosson replied. Squad members from Flint Hill and Amissville also have shock trauma training that enables them to administer IV's and other treatment under a doctor’s direction as well as cardiac training that raises them almost to the level of a paramedic, according to Rosson. Once communication equipment expands advanced life support coverage, these trained personnel “will respond to requests from other squads throughout the county to minimize expenditures,’’ Rosson said.
