potter’s clay off her hands from time to time only to plunge them into the dirt in her gardens. In addition to the vegetables found in most farm family plots, she has flower beds encircling the house and driveway, exploding in a burst of color. Her yard gives evidence of the green thumb that mad her the first president of Rappahannock's Garden Club, a group she helped organize.
The dirt from gardening follows paint and clay from arts and crafts down the wash basin drain before Helen puts her hands to her third passion, music. A music minor at Madison College, she had formal instruction in voice and on the piano that tills up one corner of her living room. She taught herself to play both the organ that takes up another corner and the guitar.
She’s given lessons over the years, bringing music into many young lives, but she makes light of her musical abilities. “I don’t play anything real well,” she emphasized over and over again. "But I’ve been glad to teach what little 1 do know. 1 don’t claim to know that much but 1 share what I know.”
