The Division of Support Enforcement in the Department of Welfare has recently attempted to contact by mail some 6400 parents who have been certified to IRS as owing a debt to the state. These parents have the oportunity to correct any errors in records or to make satisfactory arrangements to pay overdue support. Tax refunds will be released once the Support Enforcement Division has established satisfactory support arrangements with the parents.
For the past two years, the Virginia Department of Taxation has cooperated with the Department of Welfare, intercepting state tax refunds. The IRS connection now extends this help nationwide.
