a storage area fitted with necessary electrical and plumbing connections for transformation to a central kitchen. Two of the guest rooms with a bath are situated so (hat can be converted into an apartment for the caretaker or nurse who may be needed at some point in the future.
The only active solar heating apparatus in the house consists of an electric fan that pulls warm air heated through solar panels on the front of the building back to the common living room. This thermo-syphon system also pulls cold air through vents on the living room floor to the front where it is warmed by the solar panels.
The same arrangement works in reverse during summer months to cool the common space. And the insulation that holds heat in winter will keep heat out in summer with a little help from a sun shade designed to block out direct rays.
Solar heat is supplied to the north facing guest rooms by a high ceilinged hallway topped by exolite windows. The hallway wall absorbs heat which in turn warms the bedrooms on the other side of it.
The thermo-syphon system connected to the solar heating panels also adds warmth and the guest rooms are supplied with electric baseboard heat for emergency use when the sun hides behind a cloud bank and refuses to cooperate.
The entire structure is built on an eight-inch concrete slab that Ritvo expects to absorb heat all summer for release next winter when the temperature begins to drop.
