backgrounds will provide the experience to make the Middle Street Gallery a growing part of the community.
Right now, the Middle Street Gallery is exhibiting the works of two local artists. Ray Heuse, who is converting an old barn outside of Washington, restores old paintings and drawings as well as buildings. He has both watercolors and etchings displayed at the Gallery, most of them Rappahannock scenes. Ray’s watercolors, like Hughes River Near Nethers and Heron Wading in the Rappahannock, are boldly colored and as sharply cut as his etchings of Old Rag and other rural scenes.
Local artist Davette Leonard, also a resident of Washington, has pastels and pencil drawings on display at the Middle Street Gallery. Davette grew up in New York, where she attended the Art Students League. She studied at the Corcoran in Washington, D. C. and worked as a commercial artist before coming to Rappahannock County. Devette also does sign painting, logos, house portraits and calligraphy. Davette has a gentle, pleasing style as seen in her pastels and pencil drawings now at the gallery.
