Orange County, Old Dominion and Piedmont Hunt followed in quick succession, each with its own cross country course. Today there are nine race meetings on the Virginia circuit, which also includes Oatlands, Fairfax, Rappahannock and Casanova.
Established primarily to continue good sport among foxhunters after the close of hunting season, the hunt races soon became major spectator attractions. With each year the courses and fences became more sophisticated and professional, • and the meets have now become, with revenue generated from gate receipts, subscriptions and entry fees, the major source of income for many of the hunts.
In years past only those directly concerned with the participants could be found standing on yonder hillside cheering their favorite on. Today thousands of spectators turn out religiously each spring for what has become a series of annual social events in this part of the country.
