The Resource Conservation Act was enacted by Congress in 1977. As a result of the Act, the Soil Conservation Service, US DA, inventoried the nation's resources and held public meetings to determine what conservation problems concerned people the most.
Now. the Soil Conservation Service is soliciting continents to help find the best solution to those problems. "Several proposals are being considered to try and better answer what the people consider America’s most serious natural resource problems,” reported Curtis L. Johnson, Soil Conservationist, in Culpeper.
The public has said that the first problem that should be solved is the one of wind and water erosion, according to Johnson. He noted that about one third of America's cropoland is being eroded faster than nature can rebuild the soil. Each year this reduces the county’s ability to produce food and fiber a little more.
Flooding has always been a threat to people and property. The public still recognizes this and sets flood control as the second major problem to be answered.
