Driving which would raise the legal age for drinking beer to 21 years. At the present time that age is 18 for on-premises consumption and 19 for purchasing beer to take out.
This particular proposal seemed not only righteous and comfortable, but politically safe as well. Young people between the ages of 18 and 21 may like their beer, but they are considerably less enthusiastic about voting.
So, in spite of the fact that statistics seem to show that the drunken driving accident rate among 18 to 20 years old is no higher than it is among other age groups (and lower than that of drivers in their early twenties), the measure was introduced.
There was a great hullaballoo of a public hearing, passionate debates in both the House and Senate, and finally a massive watering down of the measure.
