The year of the Panthers on the basketball court came to an abrupt end last Wednesday as the William Monroe Dragons burned Rappahannock, 75-65, in the opening round of regional play.
The Panthers jumped into the lead before an enthusiastic home crowd when Robert Myers hit a fallaway jumper for a 2-0 advantage. Mike Leake then came up with two backcourt steals in a row but neither produced points. Seconds later, however, Leake powered in for a lay-up and a 4-1 edge. Tom Sisk upped the difference another notch and it looked like it was going to be an easy night.
But then Rappahannock ran into the problem that would re-occur the entire contest. The Panthers started to foul and the Greene Dragons grabbed an 11-10 lead at the free throw line. A hot shooting Sisk had to hit a buzzer shot to put RCHS back on top, 14-13, going into the second quarter.
