Bemy’s Shali and his 21year-old owner-rider Douglas King from Marshallton, Pa., are both newcomers to the sport of steeplechasing. The nine-year-old bay gelding is an open jumper, and King plans to show him again this summer. It was the horse’s second race and the rider’s fourth.
In this two and one-half mile race Bemy’s Shali took the lead at the third of 14 fences, opening up 15 lengths across the mounainside. Coming into the last fence, Donald Shepherd’s In For A Tag began to close rapidly and stood back for a big fence. Flying down the stretch, he closed to within six lengths of the winner at the finish.
