For the second year in a row, Rappahannock’s 11th graders performed above the national norm on standardized achievement tests.
According to results released this week by the State Department of Education for tests administered in the spring of 1983, eleventh graders here scored in the 55th percentile ranking in reading. 57th percentile in math, 58th percentile in language arts, 52nd percentile on social studies, 57th percentile in science and 54th percentile in educational ability.
The' percentile rankings show the relationship of scores of Rappahannock students to those of a large national sample of students at the same grade level. The 5Uth percentile (or national norm) is that point above which half the students in the national group scored and below which the other half scored.
The scores posted by Rappahannock’s eleventh graders in 1982-83 are higher than those in 1981-82 in math, language, science and educational ability, going up an overall total of eight points.
Although their scores ranked — for the most part — below national norms, Rappahannock’s fourth and eighth graders also showed marked improvement compared to last year’s performances.
Eighth graders upped their achievement scores in reading and science and climbed 12 points in educational ability over 1981-82. They dropped in social studies by 13 points and in reading by ten points but the total for all five achievement tests and educational ability improved by five points.
Percentile rankings for Rappahannock’s eighth graders this year were 47th for reading, 53rd for math, 4(ith for language arts, 45th for social studies, 55th for science and 52nd for educational abilitv.
