Looks, breeding — they are indicators that point toward the good hound. “But you can’t really tell until you try one. Sometimes, it's the little scrawny one, the runt of the litter, that makes the best hunter. It may take a whole season before you can tell.”
Foxy Traits
Jack has come to know the wild creatures that his hounds have followed for some 50 years. Red foxes will run clear out of the county; gray foxes stay in their home territory. A red fox will shinny up a tree to escape his pursuers; a gray fox never climbs.
“Red foxes will get the mange and it will practically wipe them out. The old name for it is the itch. But after they die out. they eventually come back,” Jack added. “The gray fox gets distemper. You can vaccinate a dog against it; you can't vaccinate a fox. There’s been some of it around here. Gray foxes have gotten mighty scarce. But they’ll come back too.”
