Hundreds of horsemen gathered at the Great Meadow on June 18 for their first glimpse of the future Virginia Gold Cup course and to watch champion steeplechase jockeys test any flaws.
Thunderstorms raged over Warrenton and Middleburg, but at Old Tavern where Great Meadow lies, there were only brief sprinkles as five sets of riders galloped over the three courses, their progress being broadcast by Steve Groat, coordinator of design.
First to go were children on ponies—the future steeplechase riders—and what was to have been an easy canter around the course became a race, with sibling rivalry and high spirits showing. Three Fenwick children, Charles III, Beth and Emily, were joined by Tom Arundel and Virginia Fout.
Joe Aitcheson, all-time leading steeplechase jockey, and Charlie' Fenwick, Maryland Hunt Cup and Aintree winner, led the second set of veteran riders. Going with them were perennial point-to-point champion Randy Rouse. William “Mike” duPont and Arthur W. “Nick” Arundel. They also put on a good show, with Mr. Rouse’s Cinzano trying to run off, while they galloped the timber course, passing between blue and white flags marking where timber fences will be built.
Next was a set of contemporary jump jockeys, Charles Fleischmann, David Semmes, John Coles, David Moyes, Larry LeHew, Joey Gillet and Ted Stettinius,
