Wellemyer said that a mixture of biological controls, predatory insects and low-toxicity chemicals should provide enough control to satisfy even the fussiest gardener.
There are other factors besides pesticides that make life hard for Rappahannock bees, Wellemyer noted. “We have some absentee farm owners here,” he said. “When the farm owner instructs his farm manager to maintain sterile (completely trimmed and mowed) fence rows, he destroys all the wild sources of honey. You’ll notice the old-time farmers have a variety of plants in their fence rows, providing cover for birds that eat insects, home for game birds, food for bees.”
Wellemyer listed some steps for avoiding unnecessary bee kills (at right) and invited beekeepers or gardeners to call him if they have any questions.
