To correct some of these shortcomings, the commission recommended:
A full load of requirements - 4 years of English, 3 years of math, 3 years of science, 3 years of social studies, Vi year of computer science, at least 2 years of a language at the high school level for those collegebound. A language should be started in Elementary School.
Higher expectations - schools, colleges and universities should adopt more rigorous and measurable standards.
More study time - more homework, a longer day, a longer year, more teaching ofs'udy skills.
Teachers treated as professionals, an 11-month contract to ensure curriculum and professional development, salaries and responsibilities based on merit and tenure, supervision by “master teachers.”
The commission further recommended that Americans insist that their elected officials provide the leadership necessary to provide these reforms.
